13:15 WORLD FILM PREMIERE | “Here’s to the Crazy Ones”, Including Q&A with Lee Clow

The whole UM group went to Lee Clow's world film premiere on Friday. Lee Clow is the Chairman Emeritus of TBWA/Media Arts Lab. Retiring in 2019, he has been in the industry for over 50 years. He has even won a Lion of St. Mark. The film spans decades of Lee Clow's work. Some behind-the-scenes footage was shown along with formal and informal talks Clow has alone or with former fellow employees. Along with the people at the agencies he was at, Lee Clow revolutionized advertising. Some of their most notorious work was for Apple, Nike, Adidas, and Energizer Bunny. Clow talked about losing Adidas as a client and helping Steve Jobs with many of Apple's advertising needs. Something that I found really interesting was that someone had sent over a Macbook Air in an envelope which led to the idea of Steve Jobs presenting the device that way. I love watching documentaries on Netflix, so seeing an insight into someone's work was really cool. I loved the feel of the film. I love how he uses his own words and characterizations to describe things. For example, he calls Advertising Media Art. One of my favorite quotes that Lee Clow said was, "Design isn't about how it looks. It's about how it feels." I really liked this because I feel like this can apply to so much. I had no idea that he was behind some of the major ads over the past few decades. I enjoyed getting insight into the process of coming up with, filming, and releasing ads. I remember being shown some of the Nike ads featured in the film in my high school classes. Specifically, I remember the Apple Macintosh commercial. I liked hearing Clow's perspective on it versus a teacher. While this was the premiere of the film, at the end of it, it said that the film was still being edited. I hope Lee Clow releases the film soon, so I can rewatch it and look for things I missed the first time.
